1. Martlet – A martlet is a swift (as in the bird).  Laurence Tureaud is an actor and wrestler better known as Mr T.  “Gets a” means put ‘a’ into ‘Mr T’ given ‘mart’.  Warrant = let.

5. Sushi – Sushi is a rice dish.  South = S.  American = US.  Greeting = Hi

8. Long run – this means in the distant future.  Wish = Long,  The first part of two is referring to two down, which is “run-up”

9. Kalif – an islamic title,  Kelvin = K, Forte = F.  Muhammed = Ali

10. Repel – mean push back.  Is also leper going backwards (back is used twice here)

11. Lissome – means thin.  Lizzy’s first two = Li.  Confuse Moses = ssome (i.e. anagram)

12. Napkin – means towelette.  The middle of bench = N  Similar = akin.  Papa = P.  Akin is surrounding P given “apkin”

14. Beat it – Michael Jackson sang this song.  Piece = bit.  Brewed tea = “eat”.  drinking means brewed tea goes inside bit.  [Note the clue has a grammatical error.  It should be sang, not sung.]

17. Readmit – Means let back in.  To study = read.  Private research univeristy = MIT 

19. Civet – This is a cat-like creature.  101 = CI in roman numerals.  A dalmatian’s doctor is a “vet”.

22. Amour – Means affair.  a leading movie = “am”  The Thomas Crown = “T” (i.e. the head of Thomas)  So on “tour” “am” replaces “t” giving “amour”.

23. Eyehole – part of a balaclava.  Sounds like I = “eye”.  Sounds like entire = “hole” (i.e. sounds like whole.  The ‘sounds like’ covers both words).

24. Awful – Means horrid.   Just = Lawful.  Left out means take the ‘L’ off, leaving awful.

25. Prelate – This is a clergyman who preside over a see (a “see” is a jurisdiction of a bishop)  So a prelate “has see”.  Anagram of “a petrel”.


Down
1. Molar – mean related to a mole (in chemistry).  Answer is in the clue: Eskimo larder is an Arctic lemming

2. Run-up – means lead-in.  Rex = R.  Second curtain = U.  The example is a pun.  This is raised giving “nup”.

3. Lorelei – This is a siren.  Cosmetics company = “L’Oreal”.  Lost ‘a’ means take the ‘a’ out.  Leading eyeshadow = ‘e’.  I = I.

4. Tangle – Means Ravel.  Lee = Ang Lee (famous director).  Put Ang inside Let.

5. Sakis – These are monkeys and also the nickname of Hector Hugh Munro.

6. Sellout – Means rat (someone who betrays people).  Anagram of “tell us” around “o” (our first).

7. Inflect – Means bend.  “Le” replaces “a” in “fact”.

12. Nirvana – Means ecstasy.  Anagram of Ivan ran.

13. Playoff – Means a showdown.  “Ply a” is an anagram of “play”, so is play off. i.e. off in the answer is the anagram indicator.

15. Excrete – Means poo.  My old boyfriend = “ex”  Mediterranean island = Crete.

18/16. Meryl Streep.  She’s in a movie called Doubt.  Anagram of “Mr E Presley” and “t” for talking first.

20. Viola – Viola Davis is a famous actress.  Refined oil = “iol”.  Virginia = Va.  “iol” goes in Va.
